Woven Imagination

For several years now, I have been doing group work with the students of the schools where I teach. I try to get students interested in providing valuable creations from unusable things. In fact, in the process, school students learn how to create new art from fabric, plastic, yarn, or anything else. In the meantime, they will learn how to make a new connection between recycling art and their indigenous women’s arts. In this collaborative work, it was decided that my students would weave any soft waste they have into the house. When delivering the work, some preferred to keep their weaves to themselves; They decided to use their weave as a scarf. Some of them made a leash to restrain their cattle and another group of their weaves became ropes. They learned that sometimes instead of throwing away garbage, it can be used as a useful tool. Each of the students, who did not want to weave it and thought it might not work, left it in the classroom. I put everything left together and made a colorful mat out of them. 2013 “Woven Imagination” art work with participation of 300 junior high school students, for Earth Day, Khoramabad, Iran.

These works were performed in a collage manner, and most of the materials used in them could be sewn; For example:  old clothes and rice sacks, recycled beads, old woolen , etc. This installation art  was strips of colorful cloth made of a set of rectangular forms with a floral pattern. These flowers were designed with Persian letters (first name and surname of their designer) and according to the role of iranian carpet. In this collaborative work, the method of patchwork and needlework has been used. Aqaba is a piece of embroidery and needlework related to women and is considered a women’s art and this art is common among different Iranian ethnic groups. In this method, sewing colored fabrics together, colored blankets or carpets are made and it becomes more beautiful by needlework. For this purpose, scissor-tailed fabrics or old clothes are used, which is a kind of traditional recycling in Our community has existed. In this exhibition, the canvases were in fact bags, each designed by a student and created with the help of a family member (as a collaborator). At the time of the opening of the exhibition, a number of students wore costumes with a design similar to the paintings: A Soft Garden for Earth Day in April, Photo by Tara & Atefeh Khas Before the exhibition, students’ colorful bags were arranged on a hill around the city: Zahra Goodarzi (mother) was arranged bags. In most activities, my family helps me a lot and is with me. 2012 “Soft Garden” art work with participation of 450 junior high school students, for Earth Day, Hajbar Gallery, Khoramabad, Iran.

In “An Acquaintance”, each of the girls presented a hand-made one. This hand-made was in the form of a door of tower pot, which can be used as an everyday item in the kitchen and in the local dialect it is called “takleh”. Mother or grandmother had helped student; They did it at home and used recycled fabrics and old beads and buttons. In the process, students learned, like their predecessors, to use tools that others seem to throw away and to create something beautiful. Each participant tailored their mask to the characteristics of an acquaintance in their life; This acquaintance was mother, sister or brother or neighbor and sometimes the creator of the mask herself. In the end, each student choose a dress fit with her mask to create a character with her art. The presentation of this project was in the form of video art and photo art. In the collaborative art of “an acquaintance”, the handworks had the shape of  circle, and because of the resemblance of the circle to the human head, this choice has been made to indicate the existence and art of its creator. In this work, more than 200 smileys, with different shapes, were made by 11 to 14 year old girls. The children provided texts about the faces they had made. Reading the texts, I realized that these handicrafts are much more than what is seen, they have something to say. Read some examples of student writing below:   “I drew an imaginary face because I liked to use my imagination, one of the features of my face is that it has large and sharp teeth; and is kind like the breeze, with link eyebrows, white species; Like a wedding dress, Large nose with white beads: like pearls. Eyes with blue inside; And around the eyes with green and blue beads with beads that are yellow, such as: the sun. With a cream-colored face with brown and red flowers. In general, my face has a gentle and beautiful kind face. And I made its mouth with oak to have a sign of nature. And with curly hair that represents diversity in the world. I chose the main part of it in red, orange, and lilac colors to indicate the variety of colors. And most importantly, my artwork is a girl because I wanted my work to be different from

In the first work, which was inspired by the sewing of traditional pieces,  and the fabric of old clothes was used on sack of rice. This hand-dosing was actually used as a door of pot when cooking rice, which in the local dialect is called “takleh”. The girls made this handicraft with the help of a friend at home; Like a mother or grandmother; In the next work, as a sign of pure water, they embroidered aquatic or imaginary creatures on blue cloths. They again used recycled fabrics and old beads and buttons. Pastoral life and nomadic life, until a century ago, was the most common way of life in Lorestan, and this has forced the people of this land to make the best use of their equipment. Embroidery and needlework are a type of traditional recycling that is common in this society. Participants in the process learned, like their predecessors, to use tools that others think seem wasteful and to create something beautiful. In the end, the art of each of these girls came together to see their presence more vividly. In most civilizations, eternity is depicted in the form of a circle and rotation. The circle is a complete shape and is a symbol of the world. Man knows himself in the rotation of the world. In Takele’s collaborative art, the artworks were circular in shape; because of the resemblance of the circle to the human head, this shape was chosen to indicate the existence and art of its creator. It made by girls aged 11 to 14 with a diameter of 50-36 cm. Embroidery and needlework are among the traditional arts and crafts that are presented by women in most parts of the world. Lorestan is an ancient land where the history of human habitation dates back to forty thousand years ago. Pastoral and nomadic life, which was the most common way of life in this land until a century ago, has forced the people of this land to make the best use of their equipment, and recycling is one of the best ways to use the equipment. Embroidery is a traditional type of recycling that has been popular in Iran. At school, Work process Number “Forty” is a symbol for different cultures and it is a special number that is a criterion; (Forty girls, forty thieves, forty days of worship, etc.). The shape of the hands and feet are symbols of ancient rituals that can be found in most cultures and in many different forms and meanings. The hand is one of the signs that early humans left on the cave wall. In some cultures, with looking at the palm of the hand predicts a person’s future; and also the hand, the second eye of human beings. The history of using the paw shape with open fingers in Iran dates back to pre-Islamic times, and today it is a symbol of Abbas, the brother of the third Imam of the Shiites. It is also a sign of five holy people in Islam. The “foot” shape is also very old; among the oldest are images of the soles of the feet of the Buddha; It is about 100 years BC, in that draw the “wheel of law”. Later, the soles of the feet sometimes show seven appearances or a sign of spells of happiness which the Japanese invented. Among Iranians, the role of the sole of the foot is reminiscent of the passage of a holy person; where the foot of a prophet or an imam or a great man has reached; such as “Adam’s footprint”, “Khezr footprint”, etc. For me, “hand” and “foot” are a sign of human presence, and “patchwork” is a feminine and popular art among different ethnic groups in Iran, which is made by sewing colored fabrics together, a blanket or a colorful carpet, and with a needle. Embroidery becomes more beautiful. Date of patchwork and needlework is related to women and is considered a feminine art. Patchwork were made from old clothes, which is a kind of traditional recycling that has existed in our society. I decided to revive the beautiful art of patchwork and needlework, which was common among Lorestan women not so long ago, by the teenage girls of this land. I asked my students, who were more than 440 girls aged 11 to 14, to make some patchwork. During two stages, each lasting about 40 days; The design, color selection, embroidery and needlework of patchworks were done. Each patchworks, forty pieces with figure of “two hands” or “two feet” of forty teenage girls, each of which was sewn by themselves; It is made and symbolizes the art and presence of these people. In this work, discarded fabrics and decorative items that were considered as waste were used, and for this reason, this work can be considered as an environmental work and a part of recycled art.
