Their work is a reminder of the important matters facing all human beings—things we know exist but often lose track of in the hustle and bustle of daily life. The Open-5 Group got its name when five members—all visual artists with a passion for environmental concerns—began cooperating and collaborating with other performance artists to help ensure their creative visions were achieved. Traveling to different cities in Iran and the tendency to incorporate nature, and addressing contemporary environmental issues in their work is the defining trait of this group. The variety of locations and natural elements become a part of the concept and structure of their artistic impressions. The complex relationships between spectator and nature, impressionism and the fleeting nature of reality becomes self-explanatory in the Open-5 Group photos and documentaries. Each work is introduced as an indicator showing the course of nature, and the instability of our material world is exposed as a thing of beauty, as well as introspection, for the viewer to contemplate. The artists of the Open-5 Group strive to express a sense of searching—a re-discovery of what has been forgotten within, and the natural world that supports and sustains our culture, but which we all too often take for granted.    You can download the 5open’s catalog from this website: Group Site: WWW.5baz.com

9 February 2016 (collaboration with Adriana Disman in 1st MHPB Morni Hills Performance Art Biennale, Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India; Curated by Harpreet Singh). Photograph by Subhendu Misra & Gilivanka Kedzior, Video by Razieh Goudarzi This performance was shaped by the convergence of two personal experiences. For Adriana, the street in India was a space saturated with unwanted stares; gazes that would settle on the body and create a sense of insecurity. For me, the starting point was trees—trees whose trunks are covered in white lime paste to protect them from pests, sun, and harm. This image served as a metaphor for an existence condemned to stasis; that humans, like trees, are beings that receive wounds, incur damage, and strive to protect themselves. We and the trees are both part of a whole, with analogous pains. We decided to merge these two experiences into a single performance. We prepared the protective paste for the tree trunks together and, like the trees, covered half of each other’s bodies with it; an act of mutual care—a reciprocal “covering” and “protecting,” reminiscent of the whitewashed tree trunks. We then stood along the street, in a row of trees, first apart from one another, and after a few hours, slowly moved closer together. In this gradual movement, two narratives converged. In the end, we stood together, back-to-back. Although we came from two different geographies and began from two distinct perspectives, we ultimately became one within a shared silence. The initial idea was conceived by Adriana, who proposed we collaboratively present this experience in a public space.

Her work deals with the natural world, human culture, and their intersection. Her current interests include global warming and environmental destruction; consumer culture and wasteful consumption; and artistic transformations of waste. Ann’s Stanford anthropological training, her interest in the natural world, and the many places she has lived are reflected in her art. Ann received her A.B. from Stanford University, and her M.F.A. from Wayne State University. She taught at the University of Michigan Residential College from 1978-2002, and she currently is an Associate Professor of Design at University of California Davis. She teaches courses in sustainable design and in textiles. Ann has exhibited her work in over 70 exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. She has given numerous lectures and workshops and has juried many exhibitions. The following sections present a sampling of Ann’s creative work since 1983. It includes a section featuring a special memorial exhibition for Ann’s son Patrick Savageau, a passionate rock climber who died in 2000 at the age of 20. I have worked with my students, who are about 130 girls around 11 to 14 years old, in Korramabad. They have made bags out of rags and the package of juice. Using shopping bags is not common in Iran instead they use plastic bags, so students have made a kind of fancy bags. Also I made a movie which is from Bazar in Khoramabad. I have tried to show the bags that people using for shopping.
