9 February 2016 (collaboration with Adriana Disman in 1st MHPB Morni Hills Performance Art Biennale, Government Museum and Art Gallery, Chandigarh, India; Curated by Harpreet Singh). Photograph by Subhendu Misra & Gilivanka Kedzior, Video by Razieh Goudarzi This performance was shaped by the convergence of two personal experiences. For Adriana, the street in India was a space saturated with unwanted stares; gazes that would settle on the body and create a sense of insecurity. For me, the starting point was trees—trees whose trunks are covered in white lime paste to protect them from pests, sun, and harm. This image served as a metaphor for an existence condemned to stasis; that humans, like trees, are beings that receive wounds, incur damage, and strive to protect themselves. We and the trees are both part of a whole, with analogous pains. We decided to merge these two experiences into a single performance. We prepared the protective paste for the tree trunks together and, like the trees, covered half of each other’s bodies with it; an act of mutual care—a reciprocal “covering” and “protecting,” reminiscent of the whitewashed tree trunks. We then stood along the street, in a row of trees, first apart from one another, and after a few hours, slowly moved closer together. In this gradual movement, two narratives converged. In the end, we stood together, back-to-back. Although we came from two different geographies and began from two distinct perspectives, we ultimately became one within a shared silence. The initial idea was conceived by Adriana, who proposed we collaboratively present this experience in a public space.

Her work deals with the natural world, human culture, and their intersection. Her current interests include global warming and environmental destruction; consumer culture and wasteful consumption; and artistic transformations of waste. Ann’s Stanford anthropological training, her interest in the natural world, and the many places she has lived are reflected in her art. Ann received her A.B. from Stanford University, and her M.F.A. from Wayne State University. She taught at the University of Michigan Residential College from 1978-2002, and she currently is an Associate Professor of Design at University of California Davis. She teaches courses in sustainable design and in textiles. Ann has exhibited her work in over 70 exhibitions, both nationally and internationally. She has given numerous lectures and workshops and has juried many exhibitions. The following sections present a sampling of Ann’s creative work since 1983. It includes a section featuring a special memorial exhibition for Ann’s son Patrick Savageau, a passionate rock climber who died in 2000 at the age of 20. I have worked with my students, who are about 130 girls around 11 to 14 years old, in Korramabad. They have made bags out of rags and the package of juice. Using shopping bags is not common in Iran instead they use plastic bags, so students have made a kind of fancy bags. Also I made a movie which is from Bazar in Khoramabad. I have tried to show the bags that people using for shopping.

They are signs of our familiarity with the nomadic life of the region where I was born. To make a swing, I tried to borrow the necessary tools from my surroundings; Its weave is made of wool, the swing itself is made of hemp and its red cushion is actually a damkoni (as a door for pot) that Iranians use to cook rice.

Cocoon

Cocoon, August 2011(bee Marz Exhibition, Matn Gallery, Esfahan, Iran). In the middle of the Matn gallery, in a small room, I spread a crochet on the floor; My mother had made that to be the main part of my cocoon. I attached a long red chain to the last loops of that; I crocheted it. During the performance, I tied about 120 tassels and some bells to the crochet; Then, with the help of my friends, Asiyeh Zarabi and Atefeh Khas, I hung the crochet on the ceiling. Hanging the crochet was in a way that I was placed inside it and the crochet hung from the ceiling like a cocoon. The crochet was so covered with tassels and bells that I covered with them and was lost in a colorful thing. Below the cocoon, on the ground, a notice was placed inviting the audience to swing the crochet (please swing it). And by swinging the crochet by the audience, the sound of the bells could be heard while the yellow light focused inside the cocoon, which was located in the upper part of the crochet, in the form of a large tassel. Lights were shone in the space of gallery; and when the cocoon moved faster; the lights radiated in the cocoon illuminated the space inside and around the cocoon with more power.
